oops, I bought a Mac

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

Yes you read the title right - I said I bought a Mac, well actually ordered one, They were out of the 24″ iMac’s so I have to wait a few weeks.

But to be honest, I’m not sure if I should be excited or worried, Its costing me about $2,600, I thought I’d get the 24″ because its only a few hundred dollars more than that 20″ one.

I just hope it works, and Boot Camp isn’t a bitch and works when I need to use Windows…

Flock updates

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Flock seems a little slow on releasing updates, Flock 1.0.1 uses the Firefox 2.0.0.9 code but Firefox 2.0.0.11 is out, Flock needs to release an update soon…

Star Wars Galaxies

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

I reactivated my SWG account today and started an Entertainer, its actually pretty fun just dancing and playing music, then tried out my old Bounty Hunter - kinda boring…

The collection thing is just “WTF”, I mean they tell you to kill 100+ creatures, its kinda lame…

Winzip/rar/etc

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

The other day I was trying to zip a few files that were 70mb altogether and I had to send them to someone, So I tried to zip them with Winzip - but the only thing that did was put them into 1 file which was 70mb.

I tried Winzip, WinRAR, 7Zip and they all had the same result - none of those programs could compress the files, in the end I just gave up.

What good are file compressing programs if they can’t do what they were made to do?…

Router Problem…

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

Every day around 6AM my network seems to crash or restart, I’ll be in the middle of an online game when I get a “You have been disconnected” message

I think it might be the router or that POS called Windows, Can’t wait till I get a Mac - I might buy a new router too - the one I have is quite old.

World of Warcraft

Friday, November 30th, 2007

World of Warcraft is so addictive, I’ve been on it all night.

I think its about time I went to bed, started at 1:30am and got off at 7:13am, I think I might have to find something else to do - if I keep playing WoW I’ll get bored and quit before I hit 70..

MyBB

Friday, November 30th, 2007

I’ve been making a theme for MyBB a PHP forum script, and so far I love it, its so easy to make and edit a new theme - unlike that piece of shit called phpBB.

All I did was click the “Add” theme and template links and start editing, and with the built in style editor it makes it so much more easier.

If you had to ask me, MyBB is the best free forum software available!

Would I recommend phpBB? Absolutely!
Would I use it? Hell Yeah!
What would I rate it? 10 out of 10.

phpBB3

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

I’ve been helping someone I know with their website, and they have phpBB3 setup as their forum - and I have to say I absolutely hate it!.

phpBB3 is so god damn crap its unbelievable, trying to make a theme for it is almost impossible!, I thought I had created a new template set as the list said “prosilver” and the theme I was working on, but while editing the templates it was updating both themes.

Then when it came to do the CSS I said to myself “Who the hell did this” they are adding the same things over and over, and over, for example they had

(top of file)
.example {
    background: #ffffff;
    border-bottom: 1px solid #000000;
}

(middle of file)
.example {
    padding: 4px;
    background: #ffffff;
}

end of file)
.example {
    border-bottom: 1px solid #000000;
    padding: 4px;
    background: #ffffff;
}

Seriously, who the hell codes like that? I ended up saying screw it and just put override values at the end of the file - I couldn’t be stuffed searching the whole file for every-single-part that had the color I wanted to change on the same element.

Would I recommend phpBB? Never.
Would I use it? Never.
What would I rate it? -500 out of 10.

Faster internet maybe?

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Labor flags telecoms shake-up | Australian IT

Looks like us Australians might be getting faster internet in more areas, Right now its only in a few areas that have overhead powerlines, but hopefully in a year or so more areas will have access to high speed internet.

I’m lucky, at the moment I have Cable with the speed of up to 30mbps,
Here is a speed test I did:

Mac OS X Leopard

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

I’ve always been a Windows user, I once swore I would never switch but when I saw Mac OS X Leopard I started to question my loyalty to Windows.

The most beautiful thing about Leopard is the Time Machine, my experience in backing up Windows Vista isn’t that great - When I tired it the first time it failed, and never tried again.

Another thing about Leopard I like is the updated interface its just so damn beautiful, Everything looks so simple, and from what I’ve seen on the Mac’s at the store, they look easy to use and fast, and installing applications looks so simple.

That is why next year when I have some spare money I’m going to buy an iMac, I can’t wait.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love Windows, but I see Mac OS going further than Windows.

iTunes

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

I used to just buy the CD or get my music another way, but last month I started buying my music from iTunes as its a little cheaper and I don’t have to leave the house.

I may still buy the CD’s every now and then, but for a single track or an album I can’t find in the store I’ll just use iTunes, It’s actually pretty cool - and the songs only cost a few dollars depends where you are.

Windows Vista

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Everyone is always saying Vista sucks, its unstable, its this, its that, its the worst version, blah blah blah blah blah…

Well, I’ve been using Vista for quite a while now and I have to say, I have had hardly any problems with it, I guess its because I actually know how to use it unlike those whining little babies.

“What do you mean, ‘You know how to use it’ ?”,
What I mean is, Turn off the shit you don’t need like UAC and Windows Defender, that will instantly boost the performance and stability of the system.

There are a few reasons to keep UAC on, but I really cant be stuffed having to run all my games and installers as Administrator every time, and the confirm dialogs are bloody annoying.

Windows Defender on the other hand, there is not a single reason to keep it on, all it does is slow the startup of Windows, I had it turned off for months then turned it back on then after restarting my computer I almost smashed something.

With Windows Defender enabled whenever I turned on my computer on and opened Firefox it took at least 5 minutes to launch the program, but with Windows Defender turned off it only takes a few seconds.

Besides the UAC, Windows Defender, a networking issue and Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) crashing problem, Vista works fine for me.

If you really want to know what the networking issue is, then read on,
Sometimes when I turn my computer on Vista fails to recognize that my network cable is plugged in and connected to my router, which ultimately disables me from connecting to the rest of my computers and the internet.

The Windows Explorer crashing issue problem rarely happens.
