JTickets 1.0 Stable is now release and up for download, grab it at the official Dreamlight Software website.

Dreamlight Software

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

I’ve setup a website called Dreamlight Software for the things I have,
the reason for this is there are just way too god damn many websites called JPSoft.

So instead of fighting those bastards on Googles page results I’ve decided to go with a name no one (that I know of) uses,
Dreamlight Software, This should help with search engine results and getting getting my scripts names out there.

So go on over to the website and take a look at the slightly changed layout from JPSoft.

Coda + Transmit

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Yesterday I downloaded the trials of Coda and Transmit, and after playing around with them for about 15-20 minutes I just had to buy them.

So far Coda is absolutely amazing and its much better than Dreamweaver,
Coda is a one-window application where Dreamweaver is multiple windows - which is kind of annoying and messy.

Transmit is also very cool, easy to use and very simple, I love it.

I recommend trying them out.

MyBB

Friday, November 30th, 2007

I’ve been making a theme for MyBB a PHP forum script, and so far I love it, its so easy to make and edit a new theme - unlike that piece of shit called phpBB.

All I did was click the “Add” theme and template links and start editing, and with the built in style editor it makes it so much more easier.

If you had to ask me, MyBB is the best free forum software available!

Would I recommend phpBB? Absolutely!
Would I use it? Hell Yeah!
What would I rate it? 10 out of 10.

phpBB3

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

I’ve been helping someone I know with their website, and they have phpBB3 setup as their forum - and I have to say I absolutely hate it!.

phpBB3 is so god damn crap its unbelievable, trying to make a theme for it is almost impossible!, I thought I had created a new template set as the list said “prosilver” and the theme I was working on, but while editing the templates it was updating both themes.

Then when it came to do the CSS I said to myself “Who the hell did this” they are adding the same things over and over, and over, for example they had

(top of file)
.example {
    background: #ffffff;
    border-bottom: 1px solid #000000;
}

(middle of file)
.example {
    padding: 4px;
    background: #ffffff;
}

end of file)
.example {
    border-bottom: 1px solid #000000;
    padding: 4px;
    background: #ffffff;
}

Seriously, who the hell codes like that? I ended up saying screw it and just put override values at the end of the file - I couldn’t be stuffed searching the whole file for every-single-part that had the color I wanted to change on the same element.

Would I recommend phpBB? Never.
Would I use it? Never.
What would I rate it? -500 out of 10.

CPanel bug?

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

I updated my servers CPanel so I could update Apache and PHP, to try and get the WordPress Blogger importer working.

But I ran into a problem once the update was complete, every site on my server kept returning a rather disturbing “Forbidden” message, and because I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong with the update I started to panic.

I said to myself - stop, think what could the problem be. - I logged into my server over SSH and took a look at the apache httpd.conf file and noticed my SVN setup was gone (oh shit!), so I copied my backup http.conf file over the new one and restarted apache and refreshed my site, it was working now.

But I didn’t stop there, I downloaded both httpd.conf files and compared them with a file compare program and noticed the “group” setting on the bad httpd.conf was “#-1″ and the good one was “nobody”, So after fixing that and adding back my SVN server info I uploaded it and restarted apache, took a look at my site and it was working still.

Now I know for a fact I never changed the group setting, it would have to be CPanel, right? So either CPanel has a bug, or something on my server did that - and the only 3rd party software installed is SVN which Liquid Web setup - unless Liquid Web has added some other things.

Google ‘Define’

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Most people use Google to search for websites, images, and so on, however some people use Google to define / look up the meaning of words.

For example, if I wanted to know the meaning of “Beach” I would type “define:beach” without the quote into Google and it will return something like “an area of sand sloping down to the water of a sea or lake” depending on what you define many other things can show up.

I’ve used define many times and its great, but to be honest it hasn’t always given me what I wanted.

Blogger

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Since I created this blog the other day I’ve been using it much more than my own personal blog I host my self.

Maybe its because this is more of a fun blog and not a serious one, or maybe its because I love Blogger and its so easy to post to through Flock, or could be both reasons..

Anyway, Blogger is a great free blog to use, I’d recommend it to anyone who is looking to setup a blog.

Digg and Neowin

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Just another post about my negative personality picking away at things.

First, lets talk about Digg.com, its a great place I visit it at least 2 times a day but half the time the stories I click on are down, this is caused by, I think people call it ‘The Digg effect’ ?

The server the story is on goes down and inaccessible for hours at a time - this annoys me as I then have to search for a mirror to read the story.

However, Neowin on the other hand give you a small taste of the story, I know, Digg and Neowin are different, but at least Neowin stories are accessible, The only downside is the rate stories/news is posted at is very unsatisfying, but good for taking a look at maybe twice a week.

vBulletin 3.7 First Look!

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

vBulletin 3.7 First Look! - vBulletin Community Forum

I had a quick read of the new vBulletin features planned for version 3.7, and I have to say, it reminds me of my favorite forum software, Invision Power Board.

Please excuse me while my negative personality picks apart the features.

Thread Tagging,
A rip from blogs and other things that include a tagging feature.

Public Messaging,
Digg ‘Shouts’ anyone?

User Galleries,
IP Gallery inspired maybe?

User-Created Social Groups,
Please, you can’t be serious… what a stupid idea for a built in feature.

New Profile Page,
This has Invision Power Board written all over it.

Profile Customization,
Great, now all those myspace people will be adding all their bright/dark colors and crappy pictures to their forum profiles now too…

Inline editing for Profile Fields
Is it me or does IPB have this too?

Edit History,
Hang on, I thought vBulletin was forum software, not a wiki?

Enhanced Inline Moderation,
Look, a Windows Vista feature! (User Account Control)

The rest of the features were actually quite nice, just I don’t see myself renewing my vBulletin licence any time soon, for one I don’t run a forum and secondly I’d rather use IPB.

PHP

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

PHP or “PHP Hypertext Preprocessor” is a programming language that allows web developers to create dynamic content, and it’s the best damn thing ever created by man.

All my sites are powered by PHP, its fast, its stable and its fun to code things with.
